Saturday 13th August sees Bognor start their league campaign at home to the bookmakers favourites to lift the tittle. Hornchurch, have like Bognor had a decent pre-season winning 4 and losing 2 of their games. Their latest game being a 4.2 defeat to St Ives. It was only 2 seasons ago that Hornchurch made it all the way to Wembley to lift the FA Trophy with 3-1 victory over Hereford. Since then Manager Mark Stimson has added Bromley and ex Folkestone forward Dave Smith to the squad on loan for 3 months. Last season they made it through to the play offs before losing. Bognor's two games with them last season eas a 2.1 home defeat in November, and a battling 3.3 draw up at Hornchurch; best remembered for Calvin Davies wonder strike from inside his own half. As far as I know Bognor should have a full squad to chose from ( subject to no injuries in Tuesday's friendly at Sholing) so hopefully we can go into the game with confidence and start the campaign with a win!! With the weather due to be good and Pompey playing away it is hoped a good crowd will be at the Lane to get behind the team.
COYR's!!

I was a bit worried since we hadn't heard from you in the last 30 minutes. Hope you haven't passed away , mate.
Since you have taken on your new role, it's very admirable but a bit over the top.
I think I preferred the reasonable critical person of long standing you once were to the irrational fan you now appear to be.

I was asked to try and get the forum active so I apologise if I’ve come across over the top. Just in pre season there’s not a lot going on,so thought I’d share some posts that are on twitter as not everybody is active on there.

Fair enough and no need to apologise. You're doing a grand job, as are all the volunteers who work hard for the club. Just thought I'd flag up the dangers of sensory overload.

Hopefully as the season goes on we have some old/new forum posters. As it’s no hidden surprise our forum has become kinda non existent, fingers crossed for a win Saturday and we have something positive to all talk about. Up The Rocks.

I suspect that some of us are waiting until the first league game many years of false hopes from pre-season friendlies have taken their toll! Anyway keeping everything crossed for an entertaining game, good football & of course a win.

After waiting ages it seems - we must be one of the last leagues to start their season - the time has come. Good luck to the Rocks for 2022/23. There is a new confidence around the club. Lets hope for play-offs as a minimum, automatic promotion as a bonus. I've given up hoping for good cup runs so I'm not too hopeful there and in all honesty they can be a bit of a distraction although, of course, publicity and much needed income is always handy.
Having been a regular contributor to the Matchday Programme over the last 20 years or so, I'm looking forward to reading the new one and I'm pleased the club hasn't gone down the route of some clubs of not printing one on matchdays to save money. PS I see our neighbours Pagham FC play their first away league game and a nice little 140 mile round trip to play Bournemouth FC. Travelling to Bournemouth on a busy summer Saturday could be interesting. Welcome to the Wessex Premier League! Mind you, a trip to, say, Bexhill in the old County League on a busy Saturday wouldn't have been much fun either. Good luck to the Lions.

From what I've seen in the PSFs, there are a couple of areas where we are playing very differently compared to the last few seasons. This doesn't seem to have been mentioned as far as I know in commentaries or reports, probably because all you expert football fans out there have been too busy drinking lager instead of proper beer. We might well see what they are on Saturday and I shall reveal all in my expert post-match analysis (if I am still sober).
Any comments?

Worthing game proved it and think we shocked them. Just gotta turn those chances into goals this season. I don’t drink at football,so I’ll have my fizzy drink opinion coke Saturday night 😊

A game of two halves. With the Rocks winning 1-0
First half rocks deservedly going in at the break a goal to the good, could easily have been more. Loved the link up between isaac and Joe Rabbetts down the left hand side.
Second half Hornchurch changed the way they approached the game, causing us problems. But held firm and secured the three point.
I’m happy with what I saw both halves to make me optimistic that we will have a half decent season. Problem is trying to keep everybody happy. Good luck Robbie and Jamie.

This was such an encouraging performance both from an attacking point of view in the 1st half and then defensively in the 2nd.the conditions were really difficult for both sides but some of the one touch and quick release of the ball was an absolute joy to behold.yhe chasing down and harassment of their defenders particularly by nick,Tom and Isaac was a tactic I have rarely seen in 47 years of going down the lane.to a man everyone played their part today.toby in goal had a couple of nervous moments but we must remember he is only 17 and will only grow in confidence from the clean sheet and game time once an understanding occurs.hornchurch will undoubtedly be challenging come the end of season in my opinion so a massive 3 points.we now need to build on this with 2 away games to come.this was a pleasure to watch and I truly believe any neutral or first time attendee today wouldve gone away impressed with the standard, atmosphere and quality of both sides.made my birthday a very happy one.COYR

Think the posts above describe how most Bognor fans must feel tonight. Great team performance in a game of 2 halfs. First half felt we were slick and looked excellent going forward and probably should have been leading by more than 1 goal. 2nd half Hornchurch went more direct and put Bognor under pressure. However unlike previous yearsthe defence was superb every player putting in a shift. Hornchurch are the bookmakers favourites but our performance today will make a few people look up at us. Next up Wednesday away to Cray, personally can't wait!!

Well that's all very encouraging. It's good to hear that we were able to remain strong when under pressure in the second half. It's sounds like the type of game that we would have drawn last season. The margins will be incredibly tight this season, let's hope we can carry this into the Cray game.
It's a simple formula, we just need to score more goals than our opponents.
(keep the posts coming Goldy, I'm sure there are plenty of Messageboard readers out there who don't post because they think they are talking to themselves)

The 2 areas where Rocks seem be playing differently to previous seasons are: adopting 424 formation (now regarded outdated in modern football I think) instead of 433 - this requires 2 energetic mid-fielders; and forwards pressing higher up the pitch. We seemed to start off like this today and then morphed into 4,2and a half, and 3 and half, and then back to 433. But it is a refreshing change and I hope we can keep it up. That's why I thought Calvin was MOM despite some poor free kicks. Isaac also outstanding at times.
But it was the young Rocks lads against the same old men from Hornchurch with their devious tricks. Also, the referee whom we have seen many times and is also the same. Starts off with rational decisions and then in the 2nd half loses it. Some diabolical decisions, some fouls given where only one player was involved - divine intervention, I suppose.
Also, great to see that, apart from a couple of whoopsees, no silly mistakes at the back. Some outstanding defending and closing out the match. All the players fronted up but I still have doubts about one who came on as sub - hate to say it but a passenger in my book.
Overall, a great performance against a difficult team.

A good performance as Hornchurch are a difficult and hard team to beat and will always be there or there about at the top of the league. I see the crowd was under 700 which might be seen as slightly disappointing but could that be down to the extreme weather of the last few days?

But it’s a good starting point. Nyewood Lane was ridiculous in that sunshine yesterday..

I also expected a slightly bigger crowd. Agree it was probably the weather, that and people on holiday to catch the sun! However, it was shady, breezy and very pleasant in the Stand where us elite nobs hang out.
But if you think this weather is extreme, you should try refereeing matches in the Arizona desert where the temperature goes up to 120F (and there were no water breaks).
BTW, the pitch looked very good overall despite our "extreme weather".

It was not surprising that the very high energy of the first half couldn't last into the second in the heat. However the high press in the first 45 was excellent & what a beautifully struck goal. The urchins came out for the restart determined to get something out of the game & must be wondering how they managed not to score from being so dominant however full credit to the rocks for a battling defensive performance. I think Ethan could have helped midfield recover a bit of control if he had come on as first sub. but it was the first competitive game & with 3 points against Hornchurch, job done.
