Sad to see the departure of Craney. One of my favourite players of the past 15 years. When he played in the middle of the park, he was one of the cleverest players we have had in years. Who will ever forget his winning goal against Altrincham in the dying minutes in our FA Trophy match. He has been an absolute credit to himself and the club. I wish him well in everything he does in the future

Where's this news come from? Can't see any official PR statements on social media etc.... Sad if true though.

Sad news. Probably more of a fringe player than he would have liked this season. Craney was dual registered with Horndean, who are third in the Wessex League (manager Micky Birmingham), and I reckon he'll get more game time there and try to lift them into the Southern League.
Just what our squad needed right now with illnesses, injuries and maybe too many youngsters - the loss of a very experienced and trustworthy player. Thanks for everything, Craney.

That’s a real shame - a genuine modern great. I remember his debut at Basingstoke in the old Conference South - we were having an absolute shocker of a season after the Jenkins/Awford era and, although we were still relegated, that game proved a bit of a turning point (Jahson Downes came off the bench and absolutely terrorised their defenders as I recall) and we ended the season with a bit of respectability!
He was a key part of all of our successes in the Howell/Killpartrick era, superb scoring record for a defender - just a shame he didn’t get to play more often in central midfield as I always thought that looked his best position. If his commitments allow, he strikes me as the sort of character that the club should be looking to shore up for a coaching or management role once his playing days are over. I’m hoping it’s his decision to leave rather than the clubs - the loss of his experience as we fight off relegation might prove to be a major blunder.

Just my opinion....
James Crane has been a brilliant servant of this club, and still had a lot to offer. He could play in almost any position and always gave 100%., and scored lots of goals.....which is something we are failing to do this season He was a leader and inspired those around him. Why he was not given more game time this season (unless there was an underlying injury???) seems to be a big mistake considering the way we have struggled with the younger players who have failed to show any consistency. Week in week out, the same players have not performed and yet an experienced player with a proven track record was sitting on the bench.
Personally I think Craney going, is a massive loss to this club, and wish him well in his new venture, where ever it takes him.

Players come and players go. Its part of the fabric of football. You have been around long enough to know that. Im always sorry to see players leave our club but it happens, just the same as new signings when they arrive. Football goes on regardless.

Totally get that Pete,
But you dont keep an experienced quality player, who can score you goals, and who can also motivate the people around him, just sitting on the bench week in week out He should have been one of the first names on the team sheet.

bognorbiker, fully agree with you, especially when apart from Mcleod, our mid-field is poor and imo, the main reason our results recently have been poor. Craney could have done a job for us there. For the first time, beginning seriously to doubt management judgement on selection of players, e.g when Harvey came on against Aveley, he went to full back when he could have given us some go forward in mid-field.

I’m really concerned about the direction of the club at the moment from the ‘so called’ management team. Personally think Robbie is out his depth and man management skills are clearly non-existent.
When you have a player with over 500+ appearances leaving the club due to lack of game time but as a club sitting near the bottom of the table, something is seriously wrong but that’s for a different thread.
A lot of comments I echo, personally would have liked Craney in the middle of the park, his goal scoring record (reading the paper is pretty much 1 in 6) which for a defender is remarkable.
He has been a great servant for the club and a player that will be remembered down the lane in the same way as other club legends for years to come. He provided us with some great memories from his play-off penalty against Godalming, worldie against altrincham and hat-trick at Margate.
I wish we’d got a chance to give him a proper send off but wasn’t to be. Hope all goes well at Horndean and we see him down the lane in the future, until then good health to him and his family.

Weather permitting Craney will be at Nyetimber Lane for a Wessex League Premier Division fixture when Pagham take on high-flying Horndean on Tuesday 31st January 19.45 kick-off.
