Well what to say
Playing away to one of the inform teams in the league minus 5 players was not an experience I was looking forward to. Before the game I was worried we could face an humiliating defeat. However as the travelling fans said this was the chance for some of the fringe players to show what they were capable of.
To a man every one of the Bognor players walked off the pitch at the final whistle with their chests pumped out with pride and a smile like a Cheshire cat on their faces!!!
But who could have seen this coming after a poor first half, where our players looked scared and off the pace as the of the hosts with their long balls and really long throws kept a continual barrage on the Bognor goal. Hastings took the lead when a poor tackle by the unfortunate Rabbetts gave the hosts a penalty, which Rodari duly converted. Despite continual pressure the Bognor defence well marshalled by Howick and Spurway sttod firm and kept the score to just 1-0 at half time.
Whatever the management team said half time who knows, but 2nd half a different game. Whyte and Rabbetts pushed forward further closing down early. Burgess and Davies were solid in the middle of the park and Smith and Pattenden got more space up front. However there was not really a weak link in the entire team 2nd half. Smith put Bognor level on 55 minutes when he won a penalty and got up and scored the said spot kick.
Bognor continued on the front foot, could have possibly had another penalty, and both Smith and Olanyian both missed chance where it looked easier to score!!
Despite a late rally by Hastings Spurway and Howick stood firm and in fairness Hastings were probably the happier team at the final whistle with a point.
A great 2nd half show by Bognor which gives the team a lot of confidence to take into Tuesday County's Cup match at Whitehawk
